Hello! This is Leo, and I'm back with fourth log of American psycho.
As I mentioned, although our protagonist enjoyed a life of luxury materials, his mind is actually a extremely desolate desert. Owning so much, while living so poorly inside drives him mad. In order to satisfy his internal need, he pursue his satisfaction through all kinds of dirty actions.
While suffering from OCD(Obsessive-compulsive disorder), he constantly took Diazepam, which is a medicine used to treat it, at a abnormal rate. Soon he realized this is far from enough to deal with the minor imperfections of life. Thus, he places his focus on cocaine. Although it will amplify the symptom, it seems to be his only option to greater content.
And everything turned appalling since the abuse of drug, he became more selfish, absent minded and careless as his addiction become heavier. To him, strangely, he finally get to experience what tranquillity means. Illusions and side effects of cocaine is exactly what able to relax him from all the imperfections in life and sense of loss after losing face in another material competition.
Now, free from the chains of OCD, he finally get to play his true self-a psychopath.
Instead of ridiculing the hobos on the street, he choose to actually squat and give the hobo a lesson about being positive and helping him to achieve the success that he'll never be able to catch up. Sure enough, the homeless didn’t bother to care at all. Under the conditions of freezing cold and starving, goals and trophies are too lofty to get inside your ears. After delivering his great speech and find out that no one cares, he carries out a series of torture to punish them for not paying attention, then execute them, purging the pests out of society. Again and again.
Not only hobos, he also purges anyone who blocked his way. Prostitutes who'll only look at the bills held in his hand. A Chinese hostess in the laundry shop who messed up his suit because of her poor English level. A man who outrun him during jogging. Even his college who brag about having his own private tanning bed and reservation at a better, more luxurious restaurant with his girlfriend. Eventually, like drugs, he is also addicted to murdering. As time goes by, the rate become more constant and the targets become more unpredictable.
Actually, all of this could have been avoided as long as one person takes his crime declaration made between conversations seriously. But under his impeccable camouflage of elite, everyone is willing to believe that he is just a dark humor lover rather than a psychopath. After all, who would want to have their hand dirty when they are too noble for that, right?
Hello, Leo.
