First of all, I want to apologize for only reading the first five pages (online), because of the lack of time this week. Also the book hasn’t come so I was currently reading it online, I’ll bring the book next week and start reading more.
I chose this book because when I was in high school, my English teacher recommended that I read this book. He even commented “ Everyone should read this book, it can change the way you look at life.” After hearing the idea of the book, my teacher guided me read for 10 pages, and I realized that I was interested in the main idea of the book, and wanted to know more about it. However, at that time, my English skills were not great enough for me to read it. Therefore, I want to challenge this book one more time.
The story starts with the boy who the author didn't tell me the name, the only thing I know is that he has fair hair. Later on he met a fat boy which the author didn't tell the name, and the dialogue between them showed that the fair hair boy is more a kind of person who is not afraid, or sometimes even feel exciting about terrible things. On the other hand, the fat boy is more like a pure boy who had been well cared by his family, but having bad health condition. Further in the story the author finally revealed their names by using the conversations they had had. The interesting part is that the author didn't give us the actual name of the fat boy, instead, he gave us the name "Piggy" as a nickname that he used to be mocked at. We can also find out that they were on an island and they might be no adults on the island because of a plane crushed, and the only adult-the pilot had died.
Even though I’m trying my best to challenge it, I found out the content and some of the words are still difficult for me. Sometimes I thought I knew the words but it was not the meaning I thought it was. On the other hand, the story was quite fascinating and may be deeper than it seemed. Despite the few pages I’ve read, the method the author used in describing a person was ingenious, he talked about the appearances, and behaviors, and most importantly the conversations. He seldom directly described a person, but used the things or the interactions with other people, the way he spoke and reacted to sculpt the person. I think learning a character from other angels is a fun way to dig into the story, also the relationships between the characters can be brought into life at the same time. The pictures in the story are also described beautifully and vividly, and didn’t miss the details.
I think the book is worth reading, even if it’s not easy for me to read, the story still appeals to me, and makes me want to read more about it. Hopefully I can gain more interest in the farther story, and learn some new words and methods to write at the end of the story.
Hello, Mia!
ReplyDeleteFirst, I want to mention that I have the same experience that my teachers have ever recommended this book for me as well. However, I still haven’t read this novel since then, but I have watched the film adaptation of this novel partly to gain some basic ideas. I found that I was quite interested in such a topic. Back to the blog you have posted, I agree with you that “the method the author used in describing a person was ingenious.” I think learning a character through conversations and behaviors is more well-rounded than only descriptions of a person. Hence, maybe it is one of the reasons why this work can be regarded as a “classic,” which is hard to be replaced. Last, I strongly look forward to the future blogs you will post. I would like to know more about your reflection on this story!
Hi, Mia :)
ReplyDeleteActually, when you mention that the content and some words are difficult for you, I feel so familiar because I have the same feeling. Desire to know those words’ meanings and also want to keep reading at the same time. It’s a little distressing sometimes. However, I think the book you choose might be quite interesting according to the techniques author used you have mentioned. It might make readers have more imagination about the story and characters. Hope to see your next log!:)
Plane crash on an island where the survivors were kids? Very engaging! It's a great opening to a story that hooked me to read and know more. This book must have an interesting plot. Can't wait for your next log.
