Log 2

The source and story of this book are very meaningful and valuable and this is why i choose this book "The Giver".

First of all, why did the author create this book?

In 1979, Laurie was invited to investigate a magazine story about Carl Nelson. Nelson is a painter who lives alone on a small island off the coast of Maine. She was deeply impressed by his sensitivity to vivid and delicate colors. Years later, she heard that he was blind. With grief, she thought over and over again, frantically imagining that he could give her the ability to feel color. These experiences, as well as other similar experiences, have been precipitated and filtered, and gradually formed the background of this story. The cover of the English version of this book is a photo of Nelson.

A protagonist is a young man named Jonas. Although there are some minor changes in the plot of novels and movies, it does not affect the overall reading and experience. The background of the story is in a community without color, humanity, and emotion. When the protagonist is about to turn 12, there will be a ceremony of twelve in the community, which is about the future work assignment. During this period, our protagonist will be assigned a job called Receiver of Memory. Because there is no so-called humanity, emotion, color … in this world view, a person will be needed to inherit the memory of human history.

Seeing this book gives me the feeling and reflection that no society is perfect, and you must accept it's good and evil. When a society has no emotion and color, It seems to be going perfectly, but the essence is that what you miss is one wonderful process after another. Why is life meaningful is not because of every bit of our life, whether it is quarreling or cooperation with others, or happy and sad things. It is these seemingly insignificant and unnecessary feelings that complete our lifetime.

I just want to say cherish the present and everything you have.

A passage I learned recently:

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift––that is why it is called the present.” “Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift.

  2. I really liked this book. It makes me think about whether our society is really better a dystopian society like that and what the meaning of life is.
