Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
This story is taking place in Netherfield and starts with a discussion about one rich man who comes from the north of England name Bingley. The first chapter is all about the Bennet family talking about Bingley and trying to meet with him.
One day Mrs. Bennet heard that there is a young man of a large fortune name Bingley, who is moving to Netherfield Park. Cause quite a stir in the story because he is young, rich, and most importantly single, which makes him be considered as the rightful property of someone's daughter to marry. The author said too much about Bingley that I mistook him for the male lead, not sure if it is some kind of writing skill. In this chapter, the author expressed how much Mrs.Bennet and others want their daughters to marry Bingley, make me have some weird feelings, and saw that how girls lived in that society. It seems like they can only count on a man.
Mr.Bennet believed that Bingley may fall in love with Lizzy(the second daughter of his)and Mrs.Bennet has a different opinion because she thinks Lizzy is not as beautiful as Jane nor as good-humored as Lydia. I think the author is alluding that she doesn't know, attractive women need more than just a pretty face. Mr.Bingley showed up at the ball of the second chapter and he brought four people with him, one is our male lead.
Darcy, our male lead, finally showed up in chapter three. The author described him as tall, handsome feature and noble mien. Ladies think he is much more handsome than Bingley and he drew the attention of the room within five minutes of his entrance. But he easily lost the love of other people because of his personality. He is too proud to dance with those girls at the party, he even destains them and purposely said terrible things in front of Lizzy, which makes me feel like he is not a gentleman and understand why people hate him as much as he is richer and more handsome than Bingley. But I believe the author will let this character grow in this story and let us see what we expect to see.
At this point in the story we can see that no matter how good your external conditions are, the most important thing is still a person's self-cultivation. Even though I have never read a whole English book, somehow I know this one. It seems like this one is very popular, so this is the reason why I chose this book. As the story just begins, I have no idea how is it going to be like. Let's see!
Hi, Iris!
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm fond of Jane Austen's books and hope you can keep enjoying the story!
In addition, I think Austen's narrative way always created vivid image of every character. I wonder that in the chapters you have read, which character impressed you the most and why?
Hi,Melody
DeleteI must say, it definitely is Mrs.Bennet. Not only because she appeared throughout the whole chapter, but because how the author described her as:
mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. The author also told us about her pretty throughout her husband ,she appeared in front of my eyes vividly.
It's a pity that some people nowadays still value the external conditions more than internal personality and wisdom. But I have the same thoughts as you that self-cultivation is more important, and I believe that the charisma from a modest person can never be hidden!
