Before reading the book, I've already known the author for his mysterious writing style. It seems like the story development is not according to chronological order, instead, it choosed to use a non-linear way to describe story.
At the exact first page of the novel, many confusing situations are thrown at me for absolute no reasons. Our protagonist, who I don’t know the name, gender, personal information, is being threatened by a man whose name is Tyler. With the gun barrel in his/ her mouth, our protagonist stays extremely calm and start to describe the taste, shape, and function principles behind a gun silencer. Our protagonist is also at the highest building of the world, under the building is massive amounts of plastic bombs and cars filled with explosives that will explode within ten minutes. Usually, people would be panic, knowing that there’s a high possibility of dying either under a gun or buried in the debris. To my surprise, the protagonist choose to describe ten different minor things in the each minute he got in his last time.
At the first few minutes, he choose to talk about minor things like how cold the wind is on floor 191, the grass is green, and the crowd watching them from the ground looks so small when he's so high. Later, he progressed on something more personal, saying names that I don’t recognize like Tyler and Marla. And Tyler behaves like a psychopath, he not only pointed gun in a person's mouth, crazy nonsense are also utter from his mouth "This is our world, now, our world.","and those ancient people are dead.","This isn't really death.","We'll be legend. We won't grow old." And Marla seems to be very important to both of them, since the protagonist says that without her, they are nothing.
This kind of way to describe story is very confusing, but it successfully draw my attention and make me want to keep reading and find out what'll happen next.
