Log 2

    Hi! It's Serena.👋🏻

This is the first book I have read in this class, it’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I see a few points in the book, and it intrigues me to think deeply and go search the theory behind characters’ action in the story.

The main character, Charlie Bucket, he lived in a family of 7, Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine, Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina, Mr. Bucket and Mrs. Bucket. There are seven members in this family, however, there is only one person, Mr. Bucket makes money to provide and support this whole family. Although the life isn’t easy for them, they still have happiness consists in contentment. For instance, although each of them only has a little portion of food because of less money, they will still leave it to the youngest and growing boy Charlie. In my opinion, the family may have less wealth or material but they have more love, not selfish and never stingy with offering. That’s the most valuable part in relationship, it’s that how much you can sacrifice yourself to dedicate.

The most unselfish ones in our life mostly are our parents, it occurred to me how important and marvelous our parents are.

Secondly, Charlie is a fan of chocolate, but he can’t afford it. Not because the chocolate is too expensive, it’s his family doesn’t even have enough money for living. The only time in a year he could have the chocolate bar is on his birthday. Charlie treasures every bite of it with carefully munching. Therefore, When the chocolate bar producer, Willy Wonka, announced that only five admission tickets hidden inside the chocolate bar wrapper, and the five founders can be given a tour in the chocolate factory by the most respected and confection genius maker Mr.Wonka. Everybody is frantically going mad with finding the five tickets, including Charlie and Grandpa Joy.

Among the five kids, there is a girl, Veruca, who is spoiled by her parents, the parents in order to make their baby daughter happy, the parents who own a peanut manufacturing factory order workers to rip off hundreds of thousands of chocolate bars’ wrappers to find the admission ticket. Technically, I think her parent is the one found the ticket. When Grandpa Joy heard the news, he said spoiled kids can be good for nothing. However, to my way of thinking, though Joy’s financial resources compare to Veruca’s is a big gap. Still, facing Mr. Bucket's unemployment when the whole family’s going to starve, Joy gave his secret hoard to his grandson to buy a chocolate bar instead of providing it to support the family, in my perspective, not to mention their different financial conditions. Obviously, they were doing the same thing from the thought of making kids happy, their heart will always psychologically towards their children. Therefore, I think it is the case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Thirdly, why Charlie had the money to buy the chocolate bar inside with admission ticket, it was that he picked a money that he accidentally found on the road, and he used it to buy a chocolate bar, because he was so starving that he has not filled his stomach for several days. Nevertheless, get to the bottom of this case, the money is not belong to him. It violated the sense of morality if he kept it for himself. It makes me to wonder if the worst situation happened that people can’t fill stomach, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, people can’t meet the basic needs for living, then what would they do to strive for living, afterwards, it leads to several crime activities, like robbery, stealing, transportation of drugs. For example, many countries in Africa, one of the highest crime rate states, or countries with frequent wars which are using most of their money to enhance military resources and weapons, by contrast, people are suffering and public grievances rising around. As a consequence, I believe a steady nation is based on people with psychologically safe and physically health.

In conclusion, reading this book makes me realize that happiness could be in many ways that aren’t related to money, like Charlie’s circumstances, the happiness could be a chocolate bar and the family supporting each other. Sometimes, something could not be bought, money can not do everything. Besides, this story gets me the inspiration that “the rise and fall of the nation concerns everyone.”  No one is kept out of the affair in the country. Everyone should be responsible not only for our business but also for our country.

  1. I saw this in a movie version at around eight years old, but I only remembered how handsome Johnny Depp was. HAHAHA! After reading your blog, I find that we can understand the contents in a professional way and acquire some life lessons as well.

    1. I can not believe Mr. Wonka was performed by Johnny Depp in the movie(far unlike the latest Johnny! LOL). I found out watching movie is quite different from reading a book, the latter did make me to imagine and think, unlike watching movie is more a way of receiving messages that the director wants to convey. If you want to find out more besides in the movies, help yourself to this book!<3

  2. Hi, Serena!
I was impressed by the valuable relationship in family that you mentioned in the log, especially the contribution from parents. Is there any memory or experience in which you were deeply touched by the love or care from your parents? (or you can share any warm story between you and them!)

    2. I remember the most impressive one is when I was about 12, I was hanging out with my besties, she gave me a ride back to my home, I accidentally fell down when I was on bicycle, then I was injured severely, my skin and my meat was separated. I call my dad, my dad urgently arrived beside my side in less than 3 minutes (The time to reach there is normally 5 mins), and we went to hospital instantly for a surgery. That's the moment I feel so warm and be loved when I need someone to be there the most. What my dad did inspired me how important the family is and how unselfish our parents are!

  3. Hi, Serena :)
I have watched the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” several times since I was little. I think it is one of everyone’s childhood memory. (Actually, most of my friends and classmates also have watched this movie!) Therefore, I feel so related while reading your log and I just like to be pulled back into the movie scenes. Many slides and plots fly over my brain and make me want to review the whole story again. However, you mention lots of aspects that I never notice while enjoying this movie before. I think those perspectives you dig in are quite interesting and worth reflecting on. It might be one of reading a novel’s advantages because we won’t be attracted to fancy scenes and can think more deeply.
Hope to see your next log!

    1. Hey, Xenia:)
You totally got it! Comparing between Watching movie and reading a book is quite different, when watching movie we pay too much attention on the magnificent scene and attract by the spectacular and dramatic effect, We tend to receive the message which the director wants to convey which is unlike reading a book by using our imagination and thoughts about it. Sometimes, I think watching movies did limit and restrain people's ideas more than reading a book. Therefore, If you want to find out more about the story, go reach this book! You won't be disappointed.<3
